This topic comes-up frequently and it is clear there is no easy solution, but previous white goods schemes have been very popular (for obvious reasons!) Perhaps the idea has merit to be revisited again, with inefficient fridges, freezers and washing machines replaced for more energy efficient models. The supplier could be paid to remove old units and could undertake to repair and recycle a specified proportion of them, perhaps providing them for free to folk in need of help, both within and outside the community area.
